How to Prevent Falling Off The Exercise Wagon

This is a blog post by Personal Training Ferntree Gully expert – Grant Lofthouse

There’s a million and one ways we can exercise – I’m sure you’re already aware of that.

I’m also sure you’re aware that there’s more effective ways to train for weight loss and fat loss than others.

For example…

Many personal training Ferntree Gully experts out there will state that high intensity cardio burns more fat than low intensity cardio. Whether that is right or wrong, this blog post isn’t going to argue that.

But if I have two personal training clients and I put them both on a high intensity cardio program. However one client absolutely HATES doing high intensity cardio.

There’s a fair chance that the client will not receive results from the program and reach their goal…

… or if they do manage to suck it up for 12 weeks and get through the program and achieve a result. They probably won’t stick with the high intensity cardio program afterwards to hold on to their results.

Now if I asked that client – the one that hates high intensity cardio – what they enjoy to do and they said “Grant, I actually don’t mind low intensity cardio”.

So if I mapped out an awesome low intensity cardio program for them, I can guarantee you they will achieve their goal and hold onto their results long-term – EVEN THOUGH the fitness experts will argue with me and state that high intensity cardio is more effective low intensity when it comes to fat loss.

Now why is this?

Well, the formula to achieve a goal / result comes in 3 stages. Let’s reverse engineer it…

Stage 3 – Results / goal achieved.

Stage 2 – Consistency.

Stage 1 – Fun and experience.

I’ve written about this in a more in depth article here: Ringwood Personal Training Reveals 1 Tip to a Successful Weight Loss Journey

Don’t force a square peg down a round hole

You see this all the time with personal trainers.

A person will hire a trainer to get them to force them to do the thing they don’t want to do. So they trainer will absolutely flog them and leave them in their own pool or sweat and vomit.

Then, 12 weeks later, the client is burnt out, probably injured and is dragging their feet to the gym and realise that they can’t keep doing this so they eventually quit and go back to their old ways which mean they gain all the weight they lost in the last 12 weeks.

This is very common, in fact, most clients come to me because we are known as one of the very few personally training services who DO NOT sell you 12 week body transformation challenges like every other trainer out there.

Why?

Because we teach our clients that this whole game of getting in shape isn’t a 12 week thing.

Regardless of what the experts say

If you’re performing a particular exercise regime that you absolutely love at the moment but everyone is bashing you stating that there’s better ways to do it – ignore them.

You need to stick to something long term in order to reach your goal and hold onto those results.

The only way you can stick to something long term is to revert back to the 3 stage formula…

Fun and experience = consistency = results.

No pain, no gain, right?

If you’ve made it this far and you still have that mentality of you need to do the things you don’t want to do in order to achieve your goal.

I actually agree with you…

I mean if a client said to me “Grant, I don’t want to exercise at all because I hate exercising, but I still want to lose 10 kilos”.  – well, unfortunately that just isn’t going to happen.

But because it’s exercise and because there’s a million different ways we can do it, I believe that whole ‘no pain, no gain’ concept doesn’t apply.
