Keep The Goal The Goal

This is a blog post by Ferntree Gully personal trainer, Grant Lofthouse.

The goal is to keep the goal, the goal.

Simple. Not easy.

Coming up with goals is often great fun. We get to look at inspiring pictures, think about how great it’s all gonna be when we get there, and watch old Rocky training montages.

Sticking to goals is much harder. Especially when a whole lot of other goals start to seem pretty cool.

I hear this so often: “I want to hit a 100 kilo deadlift, lose 5 kilos of body fat, gain 3 kilos of muscle, fix my knee pain, and run a 5K in two months.”

Uh huh.

The thing is, human nature thrives on doing one thing at a time… once we’re trained and supported in doing so.

So how do we put it into practice?

Focus.

Clear away the mind clutter and take the T off can’t.

Decide what truly matters to your health and happiness, right now. (You can always re-evaluate.)

Prioritize.

Be ruthlessly honest with your time and commitments. Choose what to say “yes” and “no” to and avoid the I don’t have time to exercise or eat right excuse.

Notice how environmental cues shape your how you eat and exercise. Junk food in the house, toss it. No strength plan? Email me, and i’ll be happy to help.

Do one thing at a time. With full attention and intention. When eating, take time to just eat, turn off the TV and phone.

When training, your mind should only be on the set not chatting to friends.

Respond to how your progress is going, rather than reacting that it’s not going fast enough.

Weight dropping?, never mind the speed, it’s working! Did you avoid the drive thru? That’s a win!

Make your social and physical home environment support your healthy habits. Why make things harder on yourself? And help your friends and family do the same.

Turn up the good 🙂 Be part of social and physical environments that give you energy and help you succeed.

Turn down the suck 🙁 Reduce or eliminate social and physical environments that suck your energy and inhibit your success.

This will harness your energy, relax all the mindset junk, direct you over the long haul, and ensure happiness along the way.

So today, consider how to shape the path for yourself…

How can YOU keep the goal the goal?
